Are you ready to stop being a “handy worker” and start becoming a qualified artisan? If you’re passionate about panel beating, the South African job market is hungry for certified, skilled professionals. Gaining that official Artisan Certificate of Competence (Red Seal) is the key to unlocking higher salaries, better job security, and even starting your own business.
But how do you get there? The journey can seem confusing, but there are clear, regulated pathways. As an accredited Trade Test Centre (TTC), PMT Constructions and Engineers is here to guide you through the process, whether you’re starting fresh or have years of experience under your belt.
Pathway 1: The Formal Route – Apprenticeships and Learnerships
This route is ideal for young people (typically 18–25) with little to no prior industry experience. It’s the most comprehensive way to gain the skills and theory required to master the trade.
Apprenticeship/Learnership Breakdown
| Component | Description |
| Duration | Typically 3–4 years. |
| Structure | A structured contract combining on-the-job training (practical experience) and institutional training (theory and practical skills development at a college/training center). |
| Qualification | Completion leads directly to eligibility for the Trade Test. |
| Financials | You are employed and receive a stipend or salary while you train. |
The Role of PMT
While PMT might not run the full apprenticeship program, we work closely with companies and Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), such as merSETA, to provide the final, crucial step: the Trade Test. The quality training you receive during your apprenticeship ensures you are ready for the final assessment at our center.
Pathway 2: The Experienced Route – Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL)
Do you have years of experience working in an auto-body shop but never got a formal qualification? The Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process is your ticket to getting certified without starting from scratch.
ARPL is designed to formally recognize the knowledge and practical skills you’ve gained informally in the workplace, making you eligible for the Trade Test.
The ARPL Process Simplified
- Screening & Assessment: You apply to an accredited center like PMT. Our qualified assessors will conduct a pre-assessment to evaluate your existing knowledge and identify any gaps based on the national trade standards.
- Gap Training: If the screening identifies areas where you lack knowledge or practical skills (e.g., advanced welding techniques or new measuring systems), you will undergo targeted ‘gap’ training. This is specific, short-term training focused only on the missing components, saving you years of college time.
- Trade Test Admission: Once the assessor confirms you meet the required standard, you are declared competent and recommended for the final Trade Test.
đź’ˇ The Big Benefit: ARPL validates your hard work. You skip lengthy college courses and move straight to proving your competence in a few focused sessions, saving you time and money.
The Final Step: The Trade Test at an Accredited Centre
No matter which path you take—apprenticeship or ARPL—you must pass the final Trade Test to earn your official Red Seal.
Why Test with PMT Constructions and Engineers?
- Accreditation Matters: We are an accredited Trade Test Centre (TTC) for panel beating, registered with the relevant SETAs (like merSETA) and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). This guarantees that your qualification is nationally recognized and meets the highest industry standards.
- Real-World Assessment: Our testing facilities are set up to simulate a professional working environment. You will be tested on core skills like:
- Panel Replacement and Alignment
- Body Filling and Finishing
- Welding and Cutting Techniques
- Interpreting Job Cards and Specifications
- Expert Assessors: Our assessors are experienced artisans who understand the trade inside and out. They are there to ensure you can perform the work safely, efficiently, and to the required standard.
